DXA Scanner Cleaning Recommendations for COVID-19

Tabletop Fabric

  • The pad is made of an antimicrobial material, which inhibits the growth of microorganisms. The pad is secured by Velcro strips.
The pad can be cleaned with a damp cloth or a mild cleaner such as Windex®. Other cleaners may be too abrasive. Do not use any product containing bleach.
  • A simple solution of neutral soap and lukewarm water is all that is required for cleaning Sure-Chek healthcare fabrics. Most phenolic or quaternary type disinfectants, provided they are applied in concentrations recommended by the manufacturer, may be used satisfactorily. Remember, more is not always better. Disinfectants applied at full concentration or in highly concentrated solutions may damage the fabric. Laundering of thermoplastic fabrics is not recommended. Do not use harsh cleansers, solvents or detergents.
  • Replaceable bed linens may be placed over the patient table during scanning, provided the materials do not contain nylon or elastics.
  • Note: If the Table Top pad is removed for cleaning, make sure it is re-installed in the same orientation.

Exterior Scanner Surfaces

  • The scanner exterior should be cleaned with a soft towel moistened (but not soaked) with standard antiseptic cleaning solution. The scanner should be cleaned as part of the daily cleanup associated with most facilities.
  • Note: Cleaning solutions must not be sprayed directly onto the scanner - to avoid possible damage to interior electronic components.

Patient Positioning Aids

  • Clean the vinyl coated positioning aids by wiping them with a standard antiseptic cleaning solution.
  • Clean the fabric covered leg block with a damp cloth or by removing the cover and dry cleaning.

QC Spine Phantom

  • Clean the QC Phantom with water and a soft cloth.
  • Caution: DO NOT USE ALCOHOL TO CLEAN THE QC PHANTOM.

Scanner Use After Extended Shutdowns

The Norland DXA scanners have no special procedures for startup after extended periods without use.

If it has been longer than 14 days since the last successful daily calibration, all patient scanning will be disabled (after 7 days for Whole Body scanning).

The Daily Calibration procedure should be performed using normal procedures. If the scanner experiences calibration failures, Contact Norland Technical Support for assistance.
